A celebration. veteran-2.jpgRed and green tulips in hand, blending smoothly with official banners, ribbons of dahlias looking like strings of medals, which have long been sold in markets as military memorabilia, “Victory” posters and badges, official flags hanging from all state structures, as if the capture of the city had taken place only yesterday – nothing but flags, put up to make the dull city colourful – children with balloons, veterans with their medals, a parade – in a word, a holiday on the streets and all around.

As of the end of 2007 Belarus ceased to be the last dictatorship in Europe. Not because it stopped being a dictatorship, but because it stopped being the last. And for people used to subconsciously contrasting the relatively democratic Russia with the unreservedly dictatorial Belarus the thought that Russia is becoming a country under an increasingly odious dictatorial regime requires at the very least to reconsider their understanding of the world.

“Inescapable loneliness” – is such a beautiful word-expression. This is a tragic condition. Since people are not the God, they are doomed to live in the society, generality, public life and relationships between each other. Vladimir Matskevich tells about loneliness, and critics in their turn echo his “inescapable loneliness”. About total misunderstanding of surrounding people, Matskevich knows as well. The state of loneliness – is wonderful, when it is already outlived and assigned. After an unbearable discomfort, which you could not avoid 24 hours a day, you suddenly feel a firm ground under your feet and a small island is completely enough for you. There you can live and consider it to be your own territory, protect it, but at the same time leave the boundaries open. It is necessary for understanding, for an establishment of new contacts, for coactivity, and at last for individual activity, which will be, however, perceived and understood by someone else. Otherwise the loneliness will be unbearable.
